Kingdoms of Southeast Asia
The Khmer Empire
- Khmer Empire: what is now Cambodia, was for centuries the main power on the Southeast Asian mainland.
- By the 800's, the Khmer had conquered neighboring kingdoms and created an empire. that reached it's peak of poweraround 1200.
-They prospered through improved rice cultivation, they built elaborate irrigation systems and waterways, making extreme differences in the amount they produced each year.
- Their capital was Angkor, and their they made extensive city-temple complexes.
- Angkor Wat- one of the world's greatest architectural achievements. The complex itself covers nearly a square mile, and was built as both a symbolic mountain for worship of the Hindu God VIshnu and an observatory.
Island Trading Kingdoms
- The islands were also very prosperous and many successful kingdoms began on the islands too.
-The Dynasty called Sailendra, was an agricultrual region on Java. There, around 800, another incredible architectural building was made, and it was the Buddhist temple of Borobudur.
-Later though, the Sailendra Dynasty fell under control of another island empire called Srivijaya. From the 7th to the 13th century, the Srivijaya controlled the Strait of Malacca and other waters around the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. Its wealth came from taxing trade that passed through the area under their control.
- Their capital Palembang, on the isalnd of Sumatra, became a main center of Buddhist learning and many monks went their to continue their studies.
Dai Viet
- The Vietnamese could be found in the coastal region south of China.
-Around 100 B.C. China invaded Vietnam and took control of the region. But in the early A.D. 900's China's Tang Dynasty had weakened and Vietnam regained control of their country. This newkly independent country became known as Dai Viet in 939.
- Managed to keep their own cultural identity but also started practicing Buddhism just like the Chinese.
- The Ly Dynasty, located in Hanoi on the Red River Dealta had established a fierce central government. The Ly Dynasty also believed highly inm trade and agriculture and imrpoved roads and river transportations.
-Even after the Ly Dynasty fell, their influence continued in Vietnam for many years after.
